10/6/13 UPDATE: Bennie continues to overcome his past and impress his foster family with his great manners. He is a low maintenance dog - very quiet very seldom barks. He loves brisk walks (especially in the pm), loves food and treats, and keeps his foster mom in his sights pretty much all the time - she says because she is his food source! (That's a beagle for you!) We believe that Bennie will continue to blossom with patience tempered with a lot of love and someone who is willing to wait for the reward of his affection. He will melt your heart. He gets along well with the other dog in his foster home and has done well at the dog park, but doesn't yet seem to be ready to engage in play. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night and when left at home alone - although he has now earned his foster family's trust and is not crated when they leave home.
Bennie's foster mom says he is a special dog and we all agree. We cannot know what hardships he endured in his past life to make him be cautious about engaging with humans, but with love and patience the rewards are so great with Bennie!
6/26/13 update: We have Bennie this week as a temporary foster and he is very easy going. He did a little dance for his breakfast this morning before his morning sunbathing. We think Bennie has a bit of basset in him. He LOVES his walks! He sleeps quietly in his crate at night and is quiet, not barky when left alone.
Bennie is a happy Beagle boy with plenty to cuddle! He is still a little shy and uncertain but he is gaining experience as he spends time with different humans who are kind to him. Bennie has adjusted nicely in his foster home with another Beagle but would do fine in a home where he was an only dog as well. He has done really well with housetraining and amazingly doesn't beg for food at the dinner table, nor does he seem inclined to jump up on the furniture. He learned how to use a dog door quickly and does not appear to have any problems being crated when left alone at home.
Bennie is much more beautiful than his pictures can convey and his quiet, gentle demeanor will make him a joy to have around - his shyness will require a little patience and time, but his sweet devotion will make it well worth it!
